I have mentioned this photographer before. It seems like almost two years since I discovered his work online...probably through Conscientious (Jorg does not stop with his posts of goodness...I honestly do not know how he does it...everyday with news...how and why...$$$? self-gradification??? nah.). With another glance, I find Hin's work and words even more wonderful the second/third/etc. time around. Also, he has posted new work titled After the Fall, which is enjoyable all the same.

There are a lot of exciting things going on lately. Here are a few highlights/name drops from recent life:

Casey Carter brought to my attention that ETSU graduate photography student Tammy Mercure was featured on Jorg Colberg's well respected blog about fine-art photography...Conscientious.

Darragh O'Connell of Dublin Ireland contacted me about helping with admin/posting new articles on his blog having to do with the subject of board artwork...Deckxhibit.
P.S. I promise I will contribute somehow and soon.

I am reworking the Knock On Wood website for the fourth time in two and a half years. Also, we have currently added a few new faces to the "Family" that I am really excited about.

I came across photographer/skater Mike Belleme's website since he agreed to help contribute a few pictures of George (one of the new dudes).

Mike is currently rooted in Asheville, NC, although it seems like he gets around the world quite a bit.

P.S.S.I actually came across Mike's website through a link that RJ Hess (of Tennskate) sent me...Love Bryan (another photographer from Asheville who is currently residing in NYC who has some amazing travels and amazing pictures to prove it).

At The Berrics

Attn: This blog has nothing to do with photography.

While getting my daily dose at The Berrics tonight, I remembered last nights dream.

If you don't know what the Berrics is, you probably don't skateboard. The other option is, you do skateboard but you have come to that point in your life where you don't keep up with anything skateboarding related and you would rather be playing frisbee golf or watching the news. Which ever it is, you still will not find my dream at all that interesting, because who the hell cares about what other people are dreaming about?

Without further bore, I dreamt I received a text from the Berrics giving me a shot at "First Try Fridays". "First Try Fridays" is where the camera man begins to roll the tape, an invititation and a suggested trick is given to a particular skater, whom is usually on their way to the Berrics skatepark anyhow, and that skater is suppose to make the suggested trick in one attempt upon arrival.

Besides the fact that it was Friday morning, the only thing ironic about the whole dream was that I live in Tennessee and The Berrics is located in Glendale, CA. I drove all the way there and arrived as they were turning off all the lights...I think people were beginning to play basketball on something like that? Then I remember walking outside the Berrics and somehow someone had stolen my skateboard. If I remember correctly, that someone was a white trash redneck, chilling at their RV and a drinking beer...probably watching Nascar? How dare they.

Unknown Crailgrabber...Possibly Atlanta, GA In the Early Stages of Development?

Up and coming, Aaron Smith, is a student in Savannah. He worked as an intern with Transworld magazine (that must have been exciting) and that is how I made my way to his portfolio website.

He has some pretty "artsy" work. I am excited to see his skateboard photography since I recently bought some cheapo radio slaves for similar subjects. Very niiiice.

I can't help but admire and respect the uniqueness of his work.

Legend has it Banksy "was born in 1974 and raised in Bristol, England. The son of a photocopier engineer, he trained as a butcher but became involved in graffiti during the great Bristol aerosol boom of the late 1980s."˚ His artworks are often-satirical pieces of art that encompass topics such as politics, culture, and ethics.

The Cooke Gallery of UNCA is having an opening reception February 8th, 5:30-7:30PM for the show modestly titled, PHOTOGRAPHS. The show spectacles contemporary photography from three of Yale's alumni: Mike Smith, Jeff Whetstone, and Pamela Pecchio. Jeff Whetstone got the party started with a lecture on his work tonight. Tomorrow, it will be started by finger foods. All three artists focus their cameras on the Southeastern states complementing each other by the different ways in which they work within the same context. Be there or be []. Here's some more info.

Apparently Sir Elton provided a number of photographs (ok, over 4,000) for a photography exhibit, amongst which was one featuring two young girls posing in a provocative manner...continue reading

Larry is an ETSU graduate from the BFA program and has proven not to let his artistry go to rust. I am glad there is someone from the program whose work I can admire on a regular basis. There is talk of requiring a personal website from each student in the curriculum. I would agree it to be a positive essential.

The "Golden Nugget"

Sometimes I believe there may be a supernatural causation leading to a certain consequence of an action or an event. For example:

One early morning I woke up and was out by sunrise driving around Johnson City. I was in search of an idea or hoping for an intriguing subject worthy of the ole camera and tripod. I soon thereafter came upon the "Golden Nugget". The Golden Nugget is/was a bar on the east side of Johnson City where according to a local skateboarder outside the nearby laundry machine supplier, it is "where everyone comes to get drunk". For me, this bar was more than a place to get drunk, it was a place of worship where light slips through corner windows and reveals a shadow of the word "Golden" on fashionable orange blinds. This phenomenon was only ruined, and questionably unphotographable, by a rude silhouette caused by an inside standee of a Nascar racer.

According to the local skateboarder, The Golden Nugget was temporary closed due to the neglect of paying taxes. This was the case for many weeks, for I drove by periodically. When finally it reopened and was time for everyone to get their drink on, I stopped by to ask permission to move the Nascar standee five feet over so to photograph the scene the morning after. I was declined, looked at as if I was a terrorist, and was told to come back later to speak with the owner. So I came back in the evening and the owner was still not there. I explained again how I simply needed to move the standee five feet or so and what a small favor it would be if I could do so. "I'm only the bartender", she remarked.

Days after, I am sitting in Waffle House, drinking coffee with my photo/skateboard/brother from different mother pal, Casey, and were discussing pictures. I tell him about the Golden Nugget and how great it is.

Christmas break comes around...Before I leave for home, I roll passed the bar and see that they are celebrating the Christmas season by the light decorations draped around the building. These lights are only enhancing the visual attraction of the scene. Unfortunately it is midday and they are closed. There is no chance to move the cardboard replica of a "need for speed" legend.

I return from a two week holiday in Knoxville and I am back with one goal in mind...make this picture already! THE GOLDEN NUGGET WAS BURNT TO A CRISP!

I never found out what happen, but I can guess that it had something to with an electrical fire caused by the cheerful holiday lights. This is why I dislike Nascar.

Battle For the Soul

Last night I was invited to witness the battle for the soul of photography...Photographers vs. Curators. Source, a contemporary photo magazine out of Belfast, hosted the event at Street Level gallery in Glasgow to celebrate their 50th issue and new design. Sponsored by white wine and cold beer, Miss Arpita and I happened to be the only attendees under the age of 30. The battle consisted of a series of rounds having to do with photography trivia. Neck & neck till the very end...the curators finished on top.

I have added a category to my portfolio called "new land". This was my edit of Scotland pictures up until Easter break. There have been a few set backs considering the amount of work I could have. I was unable to make pictures for about three weeks while my elbow healed after I was assaulted late night in a dark alley on my birthday. The second reason is for two weeks I unintentionally over exposed my film two stops because the exposure compensation dial had been nudged to +2. So this is what I got.

My operation of creating portraits has taken a change. I am used to working with chance encounters of random people in the society. The encounter is usually short and the picture is not well thought out. I rely on intuition and cooperation at the time.

The Scotland project has taken its own role. With the use of flyers, web ads, and some chance encounters, I have a purpose and a goal. The goal is to build a cohesive and resolved creative body of work that will accurately portray Scotland and its culture.

Weather for photography:

The atmosphere here works well as a gray card.
Overcast weather is preferable because it allows the colors stand on their own.

I have now been in Scotland for two months. I have met many Americans, Irish, Dutch, Danish, English, German, and French. I have not met so many Scottish.

With some help and persistence, I was able to get an ad on the Napier staff and student website for my photography project.

03/29/07, 9:30am: I recently photographed a young woman from a nearby town, Musselburgh. She is 25, a peace activist, a guitarist, a photographer/film, and Scottish. Her boyfriend was English and was in a few photographs as well. My flat mate Michael came with me to help take notes and enjoy the company. What a great experience it was for the both of us. She had an interesting story and was was generous with the coffee brew in the wee hours of the morning.

I was recently introduced to Alice's work this semester during Mike Smith's color photography class. I became highly interested in her pictures, decided to make a short drive to meet her, and wrote a research paper about her photography. She is an extremely nice person. ETSU's Sherrod Library holds a copy of her master thesis, "Images From Everyday Life" (1987). I recommend making the effort towards reading the thesis which includes; three chapters on herself, an interview with William Eggleston, and a section called Anthony vs. Anthony along with four prints.

Back to that Theme Park of Flux. It's called America. This is the most historyless place in history. We revise the economy constantly. We revere revision. Nothing is sacred. Look at Carleton Watkins and Timothy O'Sullivan [heroes to this 'unhere]. Not a single man-made structure in their photographs survives. What'd Dorothy Parker call life: "a medley of extemporanea?" America is a symphony of One-Offs. We're always Supersizing and Downsizing or something. That's why photographing it matters.

Otherwise known as Casey Carter. The only thing Casey can not do in life is a switch-stance frontside flip. If this term is not familiar: a "SSFS" is a difficult manuver performed on a skateboard. It is his weakness in a friendly game of S.K.A.T.E., yet as his opponent, it is not enough to bring him to "checkmate".
Otherwise known as a photographer, a well educated individual, and a true "thug".
